Equality

The Employment Equality Acts of 1998 and 2004 are substantial pieces of anti-discrimination legislation. They have been described as among the most progressive pieces of Equality Legislation in the developed world. They are having an enormous effect on the way Organisations Recruit, Select and Manage People.

The 1998 act promotes Equality and prohibits discrimination in the workplace across the nine grounds of Gender, Marital status, Family status, Age, Disability, Sexual Orientation, Race, Religion, and Membership of the Traveller Community.

It now means that organisations must take a multifaceted approach, leading to a fundamental review of its processes, the skills of its managers and ultimately the whole organisational culture.

Differences are not a threat to the workplace, only the manor in which they are handled. The purpose of the 1998 act is simply to protect and promote respect for and understanding of Diversity in the workplace.
